thai-style military harmonies from the army orchestra's brass division! the brass band was one of the earliest forms of western music to catch on in thailand, and has proved an enduring phenomenon with a distinct repertoire in addition to its borrowings. track 5, "together in harmony" is often played at the end of sports games, and while generally assumed by many thais to be of thai origin, the melody should be rather familiar to western listeners. the tape suggests it's own use at a variety of sports games.. so exponentially increase the auspiciousness of your next event with the royal big beat!!!

the legendary sayan sanya! 16 soulful ballads from the incomparable luk thung crooner. to me, sayan's music always straddled the line between city & country music; if he hadn't been a farmer from suphan buri, i think people would be calling alot of his stuff luk krung! recently, he's fallen a bit out of favor with the thai public, after his controversial remarks concerning his ailing former colleague, the late yodrak salakjai. but regardless of his character, his singing is unassailable! this is another one from khon kaen center, from the record shop which my girlfriend reminds me is named MAJOR GRAND!

chatri is crazy! he was a luk thung singer from chon buri who, at some point in his career, became enamoured with indian film music, and created this fantastic album, based largely on that sound. since him there have been several other singers who have developed a penchant for filmi, but at the time chatri was in a league of his own and his songs have been the backbone of the ลูกทุ่งทำนองอินเดีย (luk thung tham nong india) style. as far as i can tell all these melodies are original (rather than just indian tunes with thai lyrics.. please tell me if you know otherwise!) and i'm very curious to learn about the genesis of this album; are the musicians indian or thai? did chatri go to india to record this, did the musicians come to thailand? and who is the singer with him? fascinating!

okay, this one is awesome. heavy luk thung/molam rock songs; big synths, country-style shredding & distortion from the guitars, phimpha wailing over everything. phimpha is from chaiyaphum, and i think she was a pretty big star in her time. i found this tape, surprisingly enough, in chiang mai (not a major location for country music) and had it on during the terrifying north-to-northeast bus ride through the mountains of loei. hope it will go a ways to evoke that experience for all of you listening at home. the last 4 are karaoke tracks, so singing along is encouraged.

molam! here's some lam from mr. & mrs. decha + nurong, performed in very raw fashion; just voice & kaen. unsurprisingly, there's not much information available about these folks. from what i can gather, this is a recording from a lam competition somewhere in isaan.. i'm assuming they won! the tape is the performance divided in half onto either side. playing the khaen for this must be like running a marathon! i picked this tape up in khon kaen center, at that big record store near the day market.. i wish i could remember the name of it!!!

here's another "couples" tape, a good companion to the last, although this one's of a more dichotomous nature; she's a sticky rice girl (the staple food of isaan) while the lad prefers central-thai rice ("prince rice"), the kind of a country girl vs. city boy dynamic common to luk thung. can't find much online about these two singers, not sure how big a hit they were. nonetheless, the music is real good, alot of that classic luk thung organ, whichever kind it is (electone, maybe), and they've got pretty good voices for the style (the edges are smoothed out by a liberal dose of echo-box). i got this one from a slightly dingy record store on samsen road, the cover's a bit faded as you can see. the owner was a nice guy, but not too tolerant of horribly-spoken thai :)

this couple (the "rice farm boy & salt field girl") is from pak isaan (soraphet is from korat and nongnut is from khon kaen). they sing pretty great pleng luk thung. musically, there is not alot of isaan influence, but it's always great to hear a band that gets a synthesizer and still keeps their drummer! this is another from the bangkok sidewalks, not from thip but someone on the same block. note the drunken rambling of track 2.. "gin lao!"

this is a collection of some of khun suraphon's latter day hits, some of the last before his death in 1968 (พ.ศ. 2511). pretty much every song on here is fantastic. the band has amazing rhythm & texture and suraphon's voice is of course great. i picked this up from a street seller near wat po in bangkok, i think his name was thip.. he lets you preview any tape and he knows the contents & history of everything he's got. he's the best.
