this week, an amazing recording of the thai classical "12 language"-suite! played in the boisterous hard-malleted piphat style, this performance features a range of tunes in different 'accents' (that is, melodies of a foreign origin), not 'languages', per se.. and also not necessarily 'twelve' (a number chosen for auspicious reasons.. this particular recording appears to claim thai, khmer, lao, malay, mon, burmese, vietnamese, and english), and is strongly, but not exclusively, associated with funerary traditions. in the past, performances would occasionally include comic actors miming out ethnic stereotypes associated with said cultures, though this is becoming less common (for obvious reasons). our performers are the illustrious duriyapranit ensemble of ban bang lamphu, led by sutchit duriyapranit [pictured], with vocalists chaeng khlaisithong and somchai thapphon contributing. enjoy!

this week, more great thai-international bachelor pad music from the sri krung brass! from what i can piece together about their history, the group was established by narot thawonbut circa 1935 as the house band for sri krung sound film studio, to provide incidental music for the films the studio produced. their membership, including bandleaders, would vary greatly over the years, from narot on to government public relations department band (later suntharaphon) veteran saman kanchanaphalin, and again to korean ex-patriot kangwan chonlakun (a.k.a. mr. charlie kang, born kang chulkoo), who handles the arrangements here. this collection features two of their original long-players combined onto one cassette: the first highlighting thai classical tunes in a "novel style" (where they were co-billed as/with eddy's trumpets team?) and a second revisiting more contemporary luk krung hits, both filtered through a range of cosmopolitan latin and soul influences.. enjoy!

today, light classical sounds from young winners of the golden arrow prize, sponsored by the luang pradit phairo (son sinlapabanleng) foundation. this 1992 cassette released by hand acme supply co., ltd. features champion players of the khim (hammered dulcimer) from years past, performing together under the name, "the artistry of the golden arrow". the line-up features watsawati ngoenwichit (pim), prasansuk sukphadung (ae), chonticha tocharat (chiap), chalirat tocharat (choi), chalinthon tocharat (june), makhawarat bunyasirot (pao), and mathurin roemrut (klai), along with their teachers chaiyaphon chirachitkoson, atsadawut sakrik, and chaiyaphak phatharachinda accompanying them on percussion (thon, rammana, and ching). enjoy!

this week, a enigmatic gift from our pal gary of bodega pop! gary sent me a handful of cassettes recently, including 3 from this nok kaeo thai classical music series, all featuring cover models in trad costumes and uncredited musicians. after some searching, i was able to attribute this recording to khru chittraphong phonpramot. information about him was still scarce, though, other than a mention of his being a music teacher at samsenwittayalai high school in the mid-70s. also somewhat mysterious is the exact type of organ lom being played; the term describes any sort of air-driven organ, and it's hard to place exactly based on the "hot" (read: distorted) nature of the recording, but my guess would be a pedaled, free-reed sort of unit. whatever style of organ he's playing, chittraphong is joined by percussion and a khlui flute on side two, the latter of which even has a few solo tracks to itself. a very unique cassette.. hope you enjoy!

today i want to share this wonderful cassette of thai music for babies! collected here are traditional lullabies from 4 cultural regions of thailand, performed by veterans of the public relations dept. band & suntharaphon, along with local specialists. aside from serving as a surefire pacifier for your young ones, this tape also makes a pretty great introduction to the folk musics (albeit the slower ones) of thailand: central, north, northeast & south.  all played on local instruments and with both male and female voices, according to baby's preference. hope everyone enjoys! and happy birthday julius!!
