this week, smooth city sounds from khanitta chitcharoen! born in bangkok, khanitta was the daughter of famous radio personality and entertainer phonphana chitcharoen of chiang rai. on weekends, khanitta would tour with her mother, and after graduation in the mid '70s embarked upon her own recording career. following a number of solo albums, she joined the revolving duo dok mai pa (wild flowers), with whom she continued to perform until fairly recently. this, her 8th album, predates that group, and was sponsored by the friendship coffeeshop, a legendary bangkok night-life spot where she frequently performed. it features the songwriting of chairat wongkiatkhachon, charat fueang-arom, and angkhan hanwongsa with arrangements by wirat yuthawon, thanit choenphiphatsakun, and prasit chamnanphrai (veterans of the string combo and shadow music scenes). the music bears definite influence from teresa teng's enka/mando-pop style, mostly mellow ballads plus a couple smooth soul and stomping disco numbers. enjoy!

buatong mueangphrao & chaloemwet uppatham: so... ya sep thit

artist: บัวตอง เมืองพร้าว + เฉลิมเวศน์ อูปธรรม (buatong mueangphrao & chaloemwet uppatham)
album: ซอ...ยาเสพติด (so... ya sep thit)
tracklist:
01. ซอ...ยาเสพติด ตอน 1 (so... ya sep thit, pt. 1)
02. ซอ...ยาเสพติด ตอน 2 (so... ya sep thit, pt. 2)

this week, some excellent trad-style so music from the north! our lead performers are ms. buatong mueangphrao and mr. chaloemwet uppatham of chiang mai, delivering a treatise on the dangers of drug addiction, backed by an ensemble of ekkaphong kantharak on sueng, thanuphong misat on pi koi, duangdi bunrueangya on pi klang, and bunying kanthawong on pi lek. i picked this up from the artists themselves at a chiang mai night market in 2010, and it seemed to be a relatively recent offering at the time, so i'd imagine the recording dates to roughly that period. enjoy!
