this week, more great thai-international bachelor pad music from the sri krung brass! from what i can piece together about their history, the group was established by narot thawonbut circa 1935 as the house band for sri krung sound film studio, to provide incidental music for the films the studio produced. their membership, including bandleaders, would vary greatly over the years, from narot on to government public relations department band (later suntharaphon) veteran saman kanchanaphalin, and again to korean ex-patriot kangwan chonlakun (a.k.a. mr. charlie kang, born kang chulkoo), who handles the arrangements here. this collection features two of their original long-players combined onto one cassette: the first highlighting thai classical tunes in a "novel style" (where they were co-billed as/with eddy's trumpets team?) and a second revisiting more contemporary luk krung hits, both filtered through a range of cosmopolitan latin and soul influences.. enjoy!

this week, easy listening from mid-century bangkok's best orchestras! featuring a roster of groups in the mold of the government public relations department band (suntharaphon) who had cut their teeth backing the star singers of luk krung, these recordings are later efforts greatly influenced by american ensembles such as stan kenton's "artistry in rhythm" and "progressive jazz"¹, and likewise reflect the afro-cuban influence behind those works. some selections are instrumental versions of luk krung hits, some are prayuk-style thai classical compositions, and others are original pieces. expect "wall of sound"-style production, big brass, and dense latin percussion.. enjoy!

this week, upbeat holiday dance music from suthep wongkamhaeng! mr. suthep of khorat (nakhon ratchasima) left his career in visual arts to join the royal thai air force band, after being spotted gigging as an intermission performer on bangkok's movie theatre circuit. following his tour of duty, suthep became a staple in the most popular of bangkok nightclubs and appeared frequently in mid-century silver screen musicals. writer 'rong wongsawan famously wrote that he possessed "a voice like the rubbing of satin in beer foam", soft and effervescent. this cassette, based around a loi krathong-themed single, spotlights a number of popular mid-century dance rhythms; latin, thai and otherwise (off-beat, cha cha cha, tango, guaracha, talung and beguine), involving a big band, plenty of latin percussion and even some unexpected electric guitar licks. enjoy!

back this week after holiday travels, we've got a great old tape of big band instrumentals! from what i can piece together about their history, the sri krung brass were established by narot thawonbut in 1935 as the house band for sri krung sound film studio to provide incidental music to the films the studio produced. when public relations dept. band veteran saman kanchanaphalin took the helm decades later, the group became an outlet for his experiments in "modified thai classical music". on this cassette, however, what you have is your favorite thai pop melodies and percussive, folk-style talung numbers filtered through a herb albert sort of vibe. pretty nice stuff, enjoy!

phensi phumchusi, from phitsanulok, got her start early. she was winning local song contests from the age of 8 and made her first gramophone recordings at 12. in 1944, she was chosen to sing with uea sunthonsanan & the government public relations department band (later suntharaphon). she resigned from government service in 1952 to join her husband suwat woradilok's theatre troupe. five years later, they broke the military government's embargo to perform in china with writer & activist kulap saipradit (siburapha), and upon their return spent four years in prison as communist sympathizers¹. despite this, phensi's career barely took a hit; she was regularly chosen by the king to perform his own compositions and recorded countless popular standards, founded her own music school and held the title of national artist until her passing in 2007. this cassette features some of her work from the mid-60's; latin beats & luk krung ballads.. tasteful, jazzy accompaniment and even a xylophone solo here and there. enjoy!

the next couple days in thailand will be devoted to songkran, the solar new year's celebration!  the holiday finds its most obvious expression through the throwing of water, with people of all ages running rampant through the streets with flowery shirts, buckets, squirt-guns & talc.  but it's also a locus of merit-making throughout the kingdom, in particular the bathing of buddha images, and a time to return home and care for your elders.  our cassette today features a general sampling of thai holiday songs from the suntharaphon band (songkran features on track 8), done in talung style.  inspired by the captivating rhythms heard in the southern thai shadow puppet theatre, talung was one of several state-sponsored local responses to the international dance crazes sweeping thai popular culture mid-century.  big band/big beats.. enjoy!

this week, let's catch up with some long-overdue city music!  the suntharaphon band, helmed by maestro uea sunthonsanan, is in many ways synonymous with luk krung, the music of bangkok's mid-century sophisticated set.  although today they are best remembered for their slow & syrupy love ballads or their pseudo-folk ramwong numbers, it shouldn't be forgotten that in their prime this band could swing, too!  it's this latter specialty that today's cassette focuses on.  here the band deals in the ballroom crazes of the day; cha cha cha, "off-beat", swing & fox-trot as well as some more relaxed waltzes & boleros (because everyone needs to slow it down now & then).  were they a world-class dance band?  that could be debated.  are they a lot of fun?  i say definitely.. hope you feel the same!

this week, "classic goes modern dance"! pleng thai prayuk is an umbrella term for the many attempts, occurring roughly from the 60's until the 80's, to update thai classical & folk melodies with western instruments and song styles. this movement gave birth to shadow prayuk along with any number of modernized versions of molam, lam tat, isaew, etc. this cassette features what i assume to be one of the earlier attempts at such fusion, probably immediately predating the shadow trend. pieces from the classical canon are re-figured into thai-style latin jazz & lounge music settings. unfortunately, i have very little info to share about the ensemble.. though it wouldn't surprise me to learn that either mr. phayong mukda or the suntharaphon collective were involved. enjoy!!

"not too long after i had picked up the first two of the "thai beat a go go" discs, i started searching high and low for "shadow music" - although I had no idea at the time that was what it was called. i immediately fell in love with the wild mix of surf guitar and traditional percussion, resulting in a sound unlike any i had heard before.

this record was the first record from thailand that i ever bought. i was hoping that it would sound like johnny guitar or payong mukda (also known as pocket music / son of p.m.)... but what i got was something much more bizarre. more like xavier cugat goes gamelan. it almost sounds like there are two bands in the studio - one your typical latin-esque jazz band, the other some kind of gamelan orchestra - and they are fighting over who plays what. like some kind of battle of the bands gone horribly awry, yet in all of the right ways.

phoem khlaibanleng & his international mixed mahori orchestra were part of the suntaraphon collective - which was a state sponsored group of artists and musicians. during the vietnam war, the u.s.-backed field marshal thanom kittikachorn encouraged westernization throughout every sector of life. one of these sectors was ballroom dancing - with orchestras supplied by the government public relations department. eventually, due to their popularity, these musicians began performing and recording outside of the state sponsored system and to the top of the charts.
