snaeh chlong veha / rak kham khop fa

this week's post comes courtesy of the wonderful folks at the cambodian vintage music archive! they collect & share songs from the "golden era" of khmer popular music (1950s-1970s), across a number of online platforms.. follow their facebook page for all their latest uploads

today's post highlights a rare & beautiful collaboration; the 1971 khmer-thai film snaeh chlong vaeha / rak kham khop fa. directed by thai national artist s. asanachinda for asia films, it starred sombat methani & aranya namwong of thailand with their cambodian counterparts chea yuthon & dy saveth in a tale of star-cross'd lovers. the soundtrack, although bilingual, was sung entirely by cambodian singers; leading lady dy saveth took a turn on vocals, as well as legendary stars sinn sisamouth & ros sereysothea. this 45 features the former two in a duet over the title theme, first in khmer then in thai.

sung by สมบัติ เมทะนี + อรัญญา นามวงศ์ (sombat methani & aranya namwong)

our album today is the soundtrack to the film "wiwa pha fan", a 1971 star vehicle for sombat methani & aranya namwong. i'm not sure whether the film can be seen these days (i've never spotted any vcd's floating around), but i think the soundtrack was the most memorable aspect, anyhow. the song selection is quite eclectic, featuring an oddball liké-style comic number from the inimitable sangthong sisai, a heavy cha cha cha from suda chuenban & adun green, a great isan luk thung romp from nophadon duangphon and a rare rock'n'roll offering from the (typically) traditionally-minded phon phirom, alongside a bunch of slightly less interesting numbers from the film's stars. enjoy!!

i've posted this tape before (post no. 6, to be precise!), but it's so good, and i've learned so much since about the history behind it, that i feel it warrants a re-posting. chatri, from chonburi, got his start in samniang muangthong's ruam daokrachai band, but left to help suraphon's wife sinuan rehabilitate the sombatcharoen band (primarily as a songwriter) after the star's death in 1968. within a year he had founded his own band & cut his first records. in 1970, he was contracted by isaan songwriter surin phaksiri for a new sort of project... if i have my story right, her majesty queen sirikit had recently attended a screening of a hindi film in bangkok, and her glowing review seemed ready to start a bollywood craze in the kingdom. as was standard for film imports, the hindi dialogues would be dubbed into thai, but considering the musical nature of indian films the decision was made to dub the songs as well, and local luk thung stars were hired to do the job. big names like phraiwan lukphet, riam daranoi, buppha saichon & others all tried their hands at singing playback. the filmi selections on this album are dubs from c.v. sridhar's "dharti", composed by the shankar-jaikishan team, and feature chatri on the male parts (originally mohd. rafi) and yuphin phraethong doing the female (originally lata mangeshkar & asha bhosle). tacked on are some of chatri's great luk thung singles from the same period.. enjoy!

here's a quick follow-up to the last post... i don't usually post things i've compiled myself, but i thought some people might be interested in hearing the original versions of the tunes which were so expertly redone for the film fa thalai chon (or "tears of the black tiger"). most of these songs were recorded in the 1950's by the first wave of the suntaraphon stars and showcase the work of legendary composers like uea sunthonsanan, wet sunthonchamon, sane komarachun & others. i've also included a recording of the old irish tune on which the film's original song "kamsuan chan" was based.. the mp3 comes courtesy of ucsb's outstanding cylinder preservation & digitization project. hope you enjoy!

this week, some great retro sounds from modern thai cinema!! wisit sasanathiang's fa thalai chon (renamed "tears of the black tiger" in english) is maybe the best-known thai art film outside of thailand. a tribute to the country's penchant for westerns & melodrama in the 1950's, the 2000 film's vibrant color and stylized violence caught the attention of a number of prominent festivals around the globe. the soundtrack, which won acclaim as well, is composed mostly of re-recorded suntaraphon songs plus some morricone-style incidentals by amonphong methakhunawut, as befits the gunslinger theme. the soft lilt of these old dance hall tunes juxtaposed with intense, bloody gunfights made a big impact on audiences worldwide. this cassette release features the songs on side one, with instrumentals on the reverse. hope you enjoy.. and be sure to see the film, if you haven't!!

10. น้ำตาน้ำตก (nam ta nam tok)

a little while ago i got a request for some music from buppha saichon.. at the time, i had nothing to share, but i kept an eye out & just the other day spotted this great collection on the street! while the cover photo might not be the most flattering, the music is great. buppha, from chon buri, spent time in the chularat band before marrying singer & filmstar siphrai chaiphra, with whom she starred in 1970's "mon rak luk thung" (three of the singles here are pulled from the fantastic soundtrack). she also had a close working relationship with songwriter phaibun butkhan, who gave her great songs in both her on & off-screen careers, inlcuding her biggest hit, "yommaban chao ka". this collection features a nice assortment of styles.. straight luk thung ramwong mingling with surf-rock sounds, twangy steel guitar & bollywood borrowings.. enjoy!

chanthana kitiyaphan: kliat khon suai

tracklist:
01. เกลียดคนสวย (kliat khon suai)
02. ข้าวนอกนา (khao nok na)
03. ชีวิตคนดำ (chiwit khon dam)
04. ขอสักวัน (kho sak wan)

one thai musical tradition which has been under-represented here is "string", particularly the fantastic thai funk scene of the 70's. of course, considering that this is probably the genre of thai music best represtened in the western market (from those "thai beat a go-go" compilations of years past, to the fine folks at zudrangma today), i haven't felt too guilty about the neglect. nevertheless, i was excited to share this great album from chanthana with you.. imagine my dismay, then, when the reel spun out halfway through side one!! luckily the first 4 songs are the best, pulled from the soundtrack to the 1975 (พ.ศ. 2518) film "ข้าวนอกนา (khao nok na)". you can just pretend it's an e.p.! enjoy!!

the impossibles: raroeng chon

this week's post comes courtesy of radio personality & record-collector extraordinaire jesse kaminskyyou can hear his weekly fm broadcast the intercontinental on wmbr cambridge, wherein he plays music from just about anywhere you could think of.

tracklist:
01. ระเริงชล (raroeng chon)
02. จูบฟ้าลาดิน (chup fa la din)
04. สาริกาหาคู่ (sarika ha khu)

the impossibles were the biggest of thailand's western-style pop ('string') groups throughout the "import-substitution" craze of the 1970's. this 45 rpm e.p. collects the band's songs from the 1971 (พ.ศ. 2514) film of the same name, starring sombat methani, phetchara chaowarat and sangthong sisai. the songs run the gamut from smooth, harmonic ballads & wah-funk to a noisy drum-driven finale, featuring friends from the film! lots of fun to be had, in spite of the short runtime.

10. กุหลาบเขียว (ku lap khieow)
sung by สวลี ผกาพันธุ์ (sawali phakaphan)

another classic film soundtrack this week! based on a famous novel, the story "phlae kao" has been screened a number of times, but the 1977 (พ.ศ. 2520) effort by director เชิด ทรงศรี (choet songsi) is considered the touchstone, one of the first films to bring international recognition to thai cinema. set in rural thailand of the 30's, the story is a romantic melodrama between two young rice farmers, khwan & riam. the score is dominated by soft, slow ballads with prominent flute, the instrument with which khwan charms riam on-screen. the soundtrack also features 2 selections of 'period music'; a scratchy old waltz by prathum prathipasen for city music, as well as an 8 minute กลองยาว (klong yao) performance for country.. this last one's credited only to "group", though i believe it's done by the fine arts department band.

sung by ผ่องศรี วรนุช (phongsi woranut)

the film "mon rak luk thung" is considered a landmark of both thai cinema & thai popular music; its unprecedented 6 month run in bangkok upon release in 1970 (พ.ศ. 2513) represented an increasing fondness for pleng luk thung in the capitol. the story is set in a rural village and concerns the romance between a poor farmer and the daughter of a rich landowner (played by mit chaibancha & phetchara chaowarat). taking a cue from hindi films, the action is interspersed with musical numbers, many of which feature the original singers picturising their own tunes. and the tunes are in top form! featuring the work of famed songwriter ไพบูลย์ บุตรขัน (phaibun butkhan) & his team, many of these songs are pop standards, with dozens of recorded versions. the film itself also has a number of iterations, most notably as the basis of a tv serial drama (ละคร or 'lakhon') of the same name. please enjoy these unforgettable songs!

phanthiwa sinrattanan: thepthida doi

tracklist:
01. เทพธิดาดอย (thepthida doi)
02. บึงน้ำฟ้า (bueng nam fa)
03. เกลียดฝนไปใย (kliat fon pai yai)
04. เพลินชมหาด (phloen chom hat)
05. หนาวระทม (nao rathom)

this week, a pleng luk krung offering at last! and from a singer i know very little about. from what i understand, however, phanthiwa sinrattanan was an actress as well, and often sang for the films in which she starred. this collection is headed off by her theme to "theptida doi" which i believe is an old drama about ethnic minority hill-tribe peoples (though this apparently has no bearing on the music). the rest of the album is a sampling of cosmopolitan luk krung, the more consciously western of the old thai pop styles. one of the great things about luk krung is the stylistic diversity in its western borrowings; it's not unusual to hear sweeping cinematic orchestration, big band crooning, latin dance-craze beats, twangy americana and hawai'ian-inspired exotica sounds in the space of a few tracks, all interpolated through thai melodic and rhythmic sensibilities. needless to say, a lot of fun!

chatri sichon: chom nang

singer: ชาตรี ศรีชล (chatri sichon)
album: โฉมนาง (chom nang)
tracklist:
01. โฉมนาง (chom nang)
02. ธรณีชีวิต (thorani chiwit)
03. มารักกันเถิด (ma rak kan thoet)
09. อนุภาพรัก (anu phap rak)
10. สวรรค์บนดิน (sawan bon din)
11. คนจนไม่ดีเด่น (khon chon mai di den)
12. สาวอาปาเช่ (sao a pa che)
13. คนจนคนจร (khon chon khon chon)

chatri is crazy! he was a luk thung singer from chon buri who, at some point in his career, became enamoured with indian film music, and created this fantastic album, based largely on that sound. since him there have been several other singers who have developed a penchant for filmi, but at the time chatri was in a league of his own and his songs have been the backbone of the ลูกทุ่งทำนองอินเดีย (luk thung tham nong india) style. as far as i can tell all these melodies are original (rather than just indian tunes with thai lyrics.. please tell me if you know otherwise!) and i'm very curious to learn about the genesis of this album; are the musicians indian or thai? did chatri go to india to record this, did the musicians come to thailand? and who is the singer with him? fascinating!

UPDATE: see new post here!
