this week, 10 more solid-gold classics from mr. phloen phromdaen, the "king of talking music"! phloen grew up in aranyaprathet on the cambodian border, where he worked on his parents' farm. at age 20, a radio contest win landed him a spot in a local ramwong band. following that stint, he headed for bangkok to join the burgeoning luk thung scene, using his own savings to record original songs. eventually these sessions produced his massive hit "chom thung", which won him a spot among the biggest stars of the era, and even starring roles in several films. it was at this point that phloen became interested in comedy and inventive ways to incorporate clever wordplay and skits into his tracks. the result was phleng phut or "talking music", which is exactly what it sounds like: phloen will stop the music in the middle of a song to engage in witty asides with his bandmates. thai-language comprehension, of course, will help in appreciating the skits and the clever lyrics in general, but luckily the music is great on its own, featuring some of the hardest-hitting funk sounds to be found in 1970s thailand.. enjoy!

i'm heading south for the weekend, so i figured i'd leave you with some great old music from down there!  i can't tell you a thing about our singer, although the songwriter is one whose name has shown up on a handful of cassettes in my collection; nakhon si thammarat's own phetthai thanomchit.  to my ears, there's not anything markedly "southern" about the music here, aside from the percussive & funky arrangements that characterized the region's luk thung at that time.  you'll also hear some examples of the "talking music" style pioneered by phloen phromdaen.. check out the sample song for an unreliable english lesson.  enjoy!

this week we've got a great tape from luk thung funk rock star suang santi! hailing from sukhothai, suang made his living as a boxer before joining with phiphat boribun & his band. after marrying bandmate namphueng boribun, he struck off on his own, first singing with siphrai chaiphra and finally mongkhon amatayakun's famous chularat band. suang pioneered a crossover style of luk thung and heavy funk rock which few others attempted, and won success not only with his own recordings but songs he penned for others, everyone from phanom nopphon to the royal sprites. sadly, suang was killed in a car accident in 1982 while on tour... this tape captures some of his last work, featuring a mix of straight funk tracks & few of his older hits redone in "talking music" style. enjoy!!

this week, an album from the "king of talking music", mr. phloen phromdaen! phloen grew up on his parents' farm in aranyaprathet, on the border with cambodia. at age 20, he entered a radio contest and landed a spot in a local ramwong band. however, like so many others, he fell in love with the new style being pioneered by suraphon sombatcharoen et al, which would come to be known as "luk thung". he used his own savings to record original songs, and eventually these sessions produced his massive hit "ชมทุ่ง (chom thung)", which won him a spot among the biggest stars of the era, and even starring roles in several films. shortly thereafter, phloen became interested in comedy and inventive ways to incorporate clever wordplay and skits into his tracks. what he came up with was เพลงพูด (pleng phut) or "talking music", which is exactly what it sounds like.. phloen will stop the band periodically & engage in witty banter with his bandmates. needless to say, thai comprehension would help to appreciate the skits, but the songs are great as well! the tape itself, on the other hand, has seen better days.. hope you will enjoy nonetheless!
