this week we travel back to the very genesis of pleng luk thung, with the immortal khamron sambunnanon. dating from the late 1930's, this sort of music was known at the time simply as เพลงตลาด ("pleng talat" or "market songs"), and while the instrumentation is of the same "modern thai" style heard in the urbane luk krung, the lyrics provide the precedent for the sort of social consciousness that defines luk thung. khamron's songs were among the first to address the underclass of thai society; his characters are often gamblers, bandits, vagabonds, and ganja addicts. this is a very old tape, and while the tunes in some places threaten to vanish under a blanket of warm distortion, it's a true historical document, and the songs are wonderful as well!

this week, in the spirit of the holidays, a momentary diversion from theme: for chinese christmas carols! this tape originated in thailand's (not-quite-next-door) neighbour to the south, the city-state of singapore. it's a collection of western christmas carols sung by chinese children, and i imagine that's all i need say by way of recommendation. i'm not sure exactly which variety of chinese the kids are singing.. it's not mandarin, i'd wager a guess that it's hokkien or cantonese? anyone know? since i don't, i gave english translation rather than transcription here. anyhow, this wonderful gem was picked up by alexandra from a dollar bin on the sidewalks of manhattan's chinatown. thanks alexandra!!! please enjoy & have wonderful holidays! fantastic thai music returns soon!

this week, another child of suphan buri, kan kaewsuphan brings us back to the slow, harmonious side of luk thung balladry. a former boxer, kan's uniquely high, mellifluous voice brought him to stardom in the arena of pop songs, after years of struggling as an instrumentalist and backup singer in the biggest combos of the day. this album is from later on in his career; his voice is a bit deeper than at his apex, but is perfectly suited to the indispensable and otherworldly luk thung organ of the 70's, and the gentle ticks & pops of its rhythm machine.

waiphot phetsuphan is one of thailand's most enduring stars, and deservedly so! instantly recognizable, his husky voice ranks alongside khun suraphon's as among the most powerful in luk thung, and he holds his own as both a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist as well. after getting his start in the 60's, waiphot took up the mantle of religious singer midway through his career, and began focusing his lyrical content on the life of a good buddhist; this album in particular is full of songs about the joys of young monkhood, nostalgic remembrances of temple fairs, and reminders not to forget your rice offerings! the music is an nice mix of temple drums & drum machine, xylophone & synth, thai melody & western beat, etc. charming and upbeat throughout!

this week, a tape from alexandra's collection! ponglang music! these interesting tunes from the northeast feature the odd, xylophone-like ขอลอ (kho lo). the style "ponglang" gets it's name onomatopoeically from the sound of a cowbell, and pretty much just refers to any music using the kho lo. although the instrument has its own repertoire, it can also be used to play khaen-like improvisatory pieces or (most frequently these days) to accompany dance, as it is on this recording. the band plays in typical country-style groove, with some very cool basslines, great dual khaen lines and.. some weird flute on top? anyway, it's awesome! thanks alexandra :)

this week, a pleng luk krung offering at last! and from a singer i know very little about. from what i understand, however, phanthiwa sinrattanan was an actress as well, and often sang for the films in which she starred. this collection is headed off by her theme to "theptida doi" which i believe is an old drama about ethnic minority hill-tribe peoples (though this apparently has no bearing on the music). the rest of the album is a sampling of cosmopolitan luk krung, the more consciously western of the old thai pop styles. one of the great things about luk krung is the stylistic diversity in its western borrowings; it's not unusual to hear sweeping cinematic orchestration, big band crooning, latin dance-craze beats, twangy americana and hawai'ian-inspired exotica sounds in the space of a few tracks, all interpolated through thai melodic and rhythmic sensibilities. needless to say, a lot of fun!

a return to bittersweet balladry, this time courtesy of the wonderful phongsi woranut. phongsi grew up in a rafthouse on the chao phrya, up in chai nat, and rose to fame singing feminine responses to the hits of khun suraphon. she was to become in her own right a major force in the development of luk thung; her songs in the 1950's and 60's helped define the genre, and future-generation star sayan sanya got his start singing backup in her band. this album is from her middle period; basic luk thung instrumentation (accordion, temple drums) is joined in spots by wah-guitar, flute & string section. and of course, ever-present is phongsi's marvelous voice!

total-request disco-funk hits from don sonrabiap!! i picked this up from one of the myriad and ever-fascinating street-sellers on yaowarat road in bangkok. while initially assumed to be a "highlands teaching regulation" tape (as don's name would translate to), the melodic dance tunes proved to be a pleasant surprise! these are mostly covers of american hits of the 70's.. although, and i'm not sure if it's just the old fuzzy tape or something about don's lilting vocals awash in echo effects, i find that many of these versions evoke a nostalgic sentiment very much apart from their originals. don would later go on to specialize in rather vapid soft-rock during the 1980's, but this collection of early hits has an undeniable charm, with a solid beat to back! hope you enjoy!

thai-style military harmonies from the army orchestra's brass division! the brass band was one of the earliest forms of western music to catch on in thailand, and has proved an enduring phenomenon with a distinct repertoire in addition to its borrowings. track 5, "together in harmony" is often played at the end of sports games, and while generally assumed by many thais to be of thai origin, the melody should be rather familiar to western listeners. the tape suggests it's own use at a variety of sports games.. so exponentially increase the auspiciousness of your next event with the royal big beat!!!

the legendary sayan sanya! 16 soulful ballads from the incomparable luk thung crooner. to me, sayan's music always straddled the line between city & country music; if he hadn't been a farmer from suphan buri, i think people would be calling alot of his stuff luk krung! recently, he's fallen a bit out of favor with the thai public, after his controversial remarks concerning his ailing former colleague, the late yodrak salakjai. but regardless of his character, his singing is unassailable! this is another one from khon kaen center, from the record shop which my girlfriend reminds me is named MAJOR GRAND!
