this couple (the "rice farm boy & salt field girl") is from pak isaan (soraphet is from korat and nongnut is from khon kaen). they sing pretty great pleng luk thung. musically, there is not alot of isaan influence, but it's always great to hear a band that gets a synthesizer and still keeps their drummer! this is another from the bangkok sidewalks, not from thip but someone on the same block. note the drunken rambling of track 2.. "gin lao!"

this week, we've got some great "modern" isaan sounds from phimpha phonsiri! phimpha, from chaiyaphum, was one of the earliest stars to mix luk thung & molam sounds, in a style which dominates thailand's country music scene today. with capable songwriter soraphet phinyo at the helm, she delivers a great collection of luk thung isaan, with a rock band backing and even would-be indian & arabic flourishes, owing to the album's lyrical content... phimpha is chronicling the trials of a wife whose husband has left to work in "sa u", the thai nickname for saudi arabia, which drew a steady stream of migrants from thailand in the 80's, before it was cut short by the blue diamond affair. enjoy!

this week, another excellent early cassette from ms. phimpha phonsiri! phimpha, from chaiyaphum province, was one of the first big successes in blending luk thung and molam together with a modern electro-pop sound. chirping synthesizers, funky bass lines, distorted guitar riffs and our star's youthful voice; there's a lot to like on here. this is her third album, featuring once again the capable songwriting talents of soraphet phinyo to back her up. don't miss her equally great volumes one or four, either!

this week, classic isan pop from somphot duangsomphong! the lead single here is somphot's 1985 response to phimpha phonsiri's "nam ta mia sa-u" of 1982, a famous song bemoaning the lives of wives whose husbands have gone to labor in saudi arabia. sharing a songwriter (soraphet phinyo) with the earlier tune, the lyrics offer a male perspective to contradict the original (though i think phimpha's remained the bigger hit). the style as advertised is lam klon khon kaen (prayuk), "khon kaen-stlye lam klon (modernized)". musical backing is by the grand band, with some perfectly 80's synthesizers taking the khaen parts during the introductory kroen sections. enjoy!
