with easter coming up, i figured now is a good time to share this curiosity with you!  although christians are not an especially visible group in thailand, comprising an estimated 0.7% of the total population, they nonetheless have had an historic presence in the country.  today's cassette features songs in praise of jesus & his dad, played in 1970's-style thai lite-folk.. if you've seen any movies of the period or heard some of the impossibles' lesser albums, you should be familiar with the sound.  the tape's producer is prof. han songbandit of the maitrichit chinese baptist church in bangkok's chinatown.. i assume it's his daughter assuming lead vocal responsibility?  enjoy!

this week, superb arab-malay grooves from the k.t. band!  there's no info to be found about this band or either of our 2 singers.. i can't even say for sure where they're from (although this cassette came out on bangkok-based yanavy records).  what i can tell you is that they have a great take on classic arabic songs.  melodies from the middle east treated to swinging rock'n'roll rhythms complete with hand-claps, surf guitar & synthesizer.  i'm really enjoying this one, hope you do too!

it's about time, i'd say, for some more khmer surin rock!  following in the wake of other ethnically khmer stars from south isan like darkie, rock khong khoi, etc. this group gives local rhythms & melodies an international rock treatment.  the tape is from 1998, and sure the production sounds a bit dated (thanks to the liners, we know that the technics kn 2000 is partly to blame) but i think there are some memorable moments on here.  "songs for life, songs for peace, khmer style", as the cover reads.  certainly plenty of cowbell, anyway.. enjoy!

this week, we'll hear sounds of devotion from thailand's muslim community.  mariam wongsahak is a winning reciter of the royally-sanctioned central mawlid festival and a visiting scholar at islamsriwana school in bangkok's suan luang district.  here she recites from 2 chapters of the qur'an; al-ma'idah, "the table" (in part, a discussion of haram & halal foods) and al 'imran, "the family of imran" (a discussion of agreements & disagreements of islam with judaism & christianity).  although surely this recording will hold the most meaning for those of the islamic faith, i find it makes beautiful listening as well.  enjoy!

today is makha bucha day; a festival celebrating the buddha, the dharma, and the monastic community.  in thailand, the celebrations are notable for their candlelight processions, and while i don't think i have any music relating specifically to the holiday, i do have this tape about candlelight processions!  i really haven't been able to find out much about it, though, other than that the songs all see to be variations on the big hit "chut thian wian won" by mani maniwan & udon green (which i suspect comes from an older folk melody, but to be honest i have no idea).  ultimately, all you need to know is that this beaten-up old tape features mae khwanchit, sister khwanchai and their frequent male collaborator suchin.. evergreen artists of suphanburi!  enjoy!

back up to isan this week for some outstanding, danceable folktales!  our molam here are mr. sunthon chairungrueang of chaiyaphum province and ms. chumthong siangsane from khon kaen.  the word prayuk ("practical" or "applied") in the title of this album refers to practitioners of a folk genre who've elected to experiment with incorporating influences from popular culture.  mr. sunthon here saw some success in (i'm guessing) the late 70's introducing the international dance craze known as "the bump" into traditional lam klon music.  i imagine this cassette was recorded a few years subsequently; the pop influences, while discernible, are played down a bit in favor of the traditional.  wonderful phin & khaen performances and relaxed grooves linger in the background while two expert singers slowly unravel classic buddhist folktales.  to my ears, this is just some of the most genial, mood-elevating music there could be... enjoy!

this week, some great southern sounds from ms. lamyong kulapsimuang!  nang talung is the name southern thailand's shadow-puppet theatre, and lamyong is (i think..) somewhat rare in being a female troupe leader.  nang talung leaders front the band from behind the screen, giving voice to a range of characters, both male and female, alternating between song and spoken dialogue.  they are typically called upon to be singer, comedian, puppeteer & bandleader all at once.  the dialogues aim to be not only humorous but edifying, combining high-context jokes, topical commentary and moral teaching (the lead song here concerns the hiv/aids epidemic).  nang talung is probably the most prominent cultural signifier for southern thais.. you can spot the iconic puppets on vehicles, restaurant awnings, t-shirts, etc.  an amazing tradition, still vibrant and popular today.. enjoy!

after this long vacation, let's get back to righting a persistent wrong at this blog... i refer, of course, to the under-representation of phumphuang duangchan, the woman who revitalized luk thung in the 1980's and redefined notions of stardom in thailand.  this cassette takes us straight back to phumphuang's early days as "namphueng mueangsuphan" in waiphot phetsuphan's band.  none of these songs rank among her biggest hits, although the lead single has gotten a bit more well-known recently after its prominent role in the singer's 2011 biopic.  i like them quite a lot; a very different setting for a singer typically thought of as upbeat and sexy.. no small amount of phongsi woranut influence showing, either.  enjoy!

at long last, our first entry of lam tat music!  traditional or folk music (especially in a form intended for local consumption, rather than the tourist market) can be a bit difficult to find in thailand.  recently, though, i spotted this tattered old tape on the street, and now i can finally share some of this great music with you!  lam tat, long since associated with thailand's central provinces, is in fact descended from malay islamic antiphon.  it typically features opposing male & female choruses, each led by a soloist who improvises lyrical barbs & double entendres in a "battle of the sexes" through wordplay.  the musical backing is no more than a frame drum & finger cymbals.  the ensemble here is the famed wang te group, led by national artist wangdi nima, who, i'm sad to say, we just lost this past june at the age of 87.  i think you'll agree that this tape is really wonderful, despite the decay at parts... and as an added bonus, mae khwanchit siprachan makes a special guest appearance!  enjoy!!

this week some great early molam luk thung from ms. thian mathurot!  to be honest i don't know all that much about our singer, here.. i know she got her start with isan superstars dao bandon and khamkoeng thongchan.  she's been in a ton of different molam groups since then, and i think just this year she's started touring with noknoi uraiphon's siang isan troupe.  this tape is one of her earlier recordings (possibly her first), dated 1987.  the songs are mostly lam toei in a modern style, for the time.. chirpy synths and electro-tom fills, together with traditional cymbal percussion & phin.  the label is a siang siam imprint (the innovative "sound of siam" studio, namesake of chris menist's recent compilation).. expect good things!
