providing no one minds terribly, i thought we could keep with isan stuff for a bit longer, and so here's some nice lam phloen from khamkoeng thongchan! unfortunately, i don't know a great deal about khamkoeng.. he's remembered not so much as a molam in his own right than as the achan (plus composer, lyricist, etc.) of his "thongchan promotion" music collective, which launched the careers of stars like sathit thongchan, dueanphen amnuaiphon, a pojana & others.. nevertheless, he's pretty good himself! the band's got some cool keyboard & sax and of course, that unstoppable molam groove.. plus there's no beating his hat!! enjoy!

dueanphen amnuaiphon: to lom chom thung

this week's post comes courtesy of mr. peter, who numbers among the most prolific concert-goers in thailand (probably #1, among foreigners). he & his wife make it to over 100 luk thung shows a year, and as you might imagine, know quite a bit about the music.

our star today is dueanphen amnuaiphon, and despite her currently touring live act (and despite the fact that i've shared a song of her's here before!) i actually know less than i should about her.  what i can tell you for sure is that she is a prime practitioner of the thongchan sound!  along with sathit thongchan, a. pochana & others, she's a representative of achan khamkoeng thongchan's "thongchan promotions" collective based out of roi et in the 80's & 90's.  the thongchan sound is uptempo & danceable molam marked by fairly dense, electronic tracks highlighting the sax & keyboards... just try to not have a good time listening to this one.  thanks, mr. peter!!

wow! sorry for such a delay, i've been quite wrapped up in other things. anyhow, we're back this week with mr. sathit thongchan! a member of the late khamkoeng thongchan's thongchan promotions, famous for his trademark dark sunglasses (adopted after this album, unfortunately).. according to luk thung historian jenpop jobkrabuanwan, the reason for them is that his eyes are too sweet and he wanted to be judged by his singing, not his visage. in fact, he's famous neither for his looks or his remarkable singing, but the unique expressiveness of his voice on its own.. in an interview, he says the glasses are for when he goes home to work in the ricefields! enjoy!

this week, some late-80s molam pop from hongyok wilaiwan! i see cassettes by ms. hongyok around pretty frequently, but finding information about her is another matter. i can tell you the producer here was none other than achan khamkoeng thongchan, and though this 1988 effort is a lesser known entry in the catalog, it's definitely got the thongchan promotions' sound; heavy bass grooves, live instrumentation with synth flourishes. always solid.. enjoy!

this week, some early classics from the great siriphon amphaiphong! born and raised in udon thani, siriphon left school at a young age to help out on her family's farm. when not working the fields, she studied lam klon with her father, leader of the kongmi saeng-arunsin troupe. she began performing onstage at 16, eventually being discovered by doi inthanon and invited to join the suthep daoduangmai band. today's cassette was her eighth with krung thai audio (via subsidiary phin-khaen promotions) and features songwriting from khamkoeng thongchan and music by a. num phuthai. it dates from 1990, shortly before her break-out with "bow rak si dam" after she moved to pgm records the following year. 12 tracks of excellent molam pop.. enjoy!

this week some great early molam luk thung from ms. thian mathurot!  to be honest i don't know all that much about our singer, here.. i know she got her start with isan superstars dao bandon and khamkoeng thongchan.  she's been in a ton of different molam groups since then, and i think just this year she's started touring with noknoi uraiphon's siang isan troupe.  this tape is one of her earlier recordings (possibly her first), dated 1987.  the songs are mostly lam toei in a modern style, for the time.. chirpy synths and electro-tom fills, together with traditional cymbal percussion & phin.  the label is a siang siam imprint (the innovative "sound of siam" studio, namesake of chris menist's recent compilation).. expect good things!
