back this week with some bangkok pop-rock from the jungle-flower group! dok mai pa is chothima chuangwit (daughter of suntharaphon's chawali chuangwit) & pattama monrangsi, a female singing duo put together by montri phonphanthin to build off the fame of the renowned hot pepper singers. this cassette, dating from 1982, is their first, and seems to consist mostly of thai copy-songs of chinese hits. unfortunately, it seems this poor old tape got a bit demagnetized at some point, though only the first track seems to be affected severely. it's the biggest single, but hey, what can you do? enjoy the rest!

this week, to make up for a long absence, we've got a classic cassette from one of my personal favorite molam pop stars. honey sri'isan, from kalasin, was a big name in her home region before becoming known nationwide as a model (she was the first and only molam to appear as a cover girl for malai thai rath). this 1991 cassette contains the second of two albums she recorded for the bangkok-based thai-muslim imprint yanavy sound. with compositions by the legendary dao bandon and music by a. num phuthai & his band, pop molam doesn't get much better than this. sadly, honey died just a year after this album when her pickup overturned on the way back from a concert in sisaket. the location on the highway is still marked with a shrine where regular performances are held in her memory^[1].

this week, a great collection of tunes by khaen maestro samai onwong! although hailing from thailand's southwestern phetchaburi province, far from the khaen's northeast heartland, samai was the artist who firmly secured the instrument's place in luk thung music (though its sound and style could be heard earlier, typically approximated by a fellow free reed, the accordion). this accomplishment earned him his nickname, khunphon khaen daen sayam; "khaen lord of siam". just a word of warning: this cassette had some pretty severe warping on a track 8. the rest sounds quite fine, though.. enjoy!

this week, a great old cassette from the pong lang ubon band! i'm delighted to be able to share some information direct from one of the musicians, the esteemed achan tinnakorn attapaiboon of mahasarakham university, who shared the following reminiscences:

"we recorded this album at mr. phaibun supawari's bang po studio [in bangkok], under the financing of dr. sukri charoensuk. this is because some of the songs from those sessions (including a lam phuen by national artist thongmak chanthaluea) would be used for a compilation album phleng chao siam 4 phak that dr. sukri was putting together. as for the molam featured here, her name was maliwan khamloi; she lives in germany now. her older brother was a musician as well, and he joined us on khaen for this recording. the session also happened to coincide with ubon ratchathani's 2nd centenary in 1992. i sang lead vocals and played wot for the song 'ubon ratchathani' [track 9], which was written by achan thoet bunyaratphan in a folksong style. our band won the silver conch award from the government public relations department that year. chatchai chunhawan was chairman at that time, and presented us with the award during a ceremony at the ambassador hotel [in bangkok]."

this week, southern-style luk thung from sarika kingthong! sarika grew up in chumphon, the daughter of famed nang talung puppet master chuliam kingthong. she was one of luk thung's first transgender stars, presenting a masculine image in both her physical appearance and through her lyrics, although her name and singing voice were female. according to wikipedia, at least part of her popularity involved debate over the singer's gender. sarika is memorable as well for the tribute she pays to her regional heritage, utilizing the paired-gong rhythms of the shadow theatre and plenty of southern dialect. really excellent.. enjoy!

this week, some 1970s folk-rock fusion from the isn't! the group was founded by brothers asanee & wasan chotikul from the northeastern province of loei ("isn't" being a referance to "isan"). much of their material was a light folk-rock in the style of simon & garfunkel (with a good amount of copy-songs present), but they recorded a few numbers with a heavier guitar sound as well, and even made some attempts to integrate thai/lao folk influences in addition to the anglo-american. they broke up after these recordings were released, with asanee playing alongside rewat buddhinan in the oriental funk and butterfly for a time, before coming back together as simply asanee-wasan and thereafter topping the charts for at least a decade.

this week, an excellent old tape featuring some early, early recordings by chawiwan damnoen, back from her days co-starring with thongkham phengdi in the rangsiman group of ubon, between 1965 and 1970. the lam rueng to klon style heard here combines lam klon, where male & female leads engage in a brilliant improvised poetry battles, with lam rueang, a sort of stage-play based on buddhist canon or local folktales. the subject here is the ever-popular story of thao kam ka dam, a boy with dark skin who marries a princess. unfortunately, this is only part 2 of a multi-part series, so you won't be getting the whole story. fortunately, though, there's still a ton of beautiful music to enjoy!

this week, the smooth sounds of charin nanthanakhon, crooning the bangkok blues! charin, originally from the northern city of chiang mai, first came to the capital for university. it was at this time that he began musical career under the tutelage of salai krailoet, famous violinist and composer for the luk krung circle. charin was famous not only in the music world but for his acting as well; originally a theatre performer, he made his mark especially in the film world; as actor, director and husband to preeminent film icon phetchara chaowarat^[1]. this tape is the second volume in a series of hit collections, featuring some of his original classic performances. enjoy!

given the festive time of year that's underway, in much of mainland southeast asia, it seemed only right to share this classic album of what is possibly thai music's quintessential sound of celebration; the rhythms of the klong yao (long drum) troupe! although the artists go uncredited on the cassette, i feel confident enough to say that they are the sak sinlapin group, who made several recordings for the sri krung label in the 1970s. from the heavy percussion, yodels, cheers & hollers to the humorous call & response choruses, everything on here spells a good time. interestingly, the second side even finds some piphat orchestration added to the mix. enjoy & happy new year!

apologies for posting so infrequently these days! i finally got something together for everyone today, featuring none other than the "queen of modern luk thung-molam", banyen rakkaen! a native of ubon ratchathani, banyen joined her first molam troupe after 4th grade and was performing lam by age 14. she spent some time in thongkham phaengdi's retinue, before founding her own group at 18! this cassette features some excellent early recordings of her lam phon sawan (don sawan?), lam tang wai, lam phloen & more! there are a few areas of damaged tape, but the rest of the album sounds great.. enjoy!!
