this week, a compilation exploring the fascinating thai folk song scene of the '70s! jumping off from the english loan-phrase "folk song", this descriptor applied not to any of the traditional folk music styles of thailand, but rather to pop music influenced largely by recordings from the mid-century anglo-american folk revival. the people at 4-track have gathered an eclectic range of artists, from the sunshine pop string-combo sounds of chatri, don sonrabiap, and the impossibles, the isan-flavored rock of the isn't, acoustic coffeehouse girls-with-guitars like sirithana hongsophon and orasa thongthap, and even a surprising adaptation of hank williams' "kaw-liga" from sirima sunthon na rangsi and the surf-rock group silversand. enjoy!
