this week, luk thung classics get a digital pop update at the hands of kung tuangsit! best known as the smooth vocalist for nithithat super-group phuean, kung's solo efforts began in 1990 with this cassette, the first a series revisiting country classics. kung takes his own spin on songs made famous by suraphon sombatcharoen, sayan sanya, yotrak salakchai, etc. in prior decades. with new arrangements and production by grand 'ex alum/phuean co-founder thanongsak aphonsiri, you're all but guaranteed a good time. i've got a second volume to post, too, if you enjoy!

this week, some sweet '90s luk thung from denchai sai-suphan! as you might surmise from his stage-surname, denchai is from suphan buri, a rajabhat graduate and local event singer who got his break via the channel 11 song contest in 1993. from there, he was drafted into warner music thailand's first roster of luk thung singers. after a handful of albums with the label, though, he defected to sansoen rungserichai's boxing sound, where he released today's cassette. a great mix of bittersweet country ballads and disco-based dance numbers. enjoy!

this week, absolute luk thung isan classics from a young noknoi uraiphon! a native of sisaket, noknoi came up through radio station song contests to land a spot in nopphadon duangphon's famed phet phin thong band in ubon, where she was initially a nanny for the bandleader's children. from there she progressed from background dancer to star singer, during which time she recorded the singles collected here (roughly 1970-1975). after leaving phet phin thong, she formed her own group, siang isan, which would dominate the molam luk thung scene for decades. this tape is an amazing collection of both her mellow luk thung tracks and fiery phin prayuk from thongsai thapthanon and bandmates. enjoy!

this week, a compilation exploring the fascinating thai folk song scene of the '70s! jumping off from the english loan-phrase "folk song", this descriptor applied not to any of the traditional folk music styles of thailand, but rather to pop music influenced largely by recordings from the mid-century anglo-american folk revival. the people at 4-track have gathered an eclectic range of artists, from the sunshine pop string-combo sounds of chatri, don sonrabiap, and the impossibles, the isan-flavored rock of the isn't, acoustic coffeehouse girls-with-guitars like sirithana hongsophon and orasa thongthap, and even a surprising adaptation of hank williams' "kaw-liga" from sirima sunthon na rangsi and the surf-rock group silversand. enjoy!
