given the festive time of year that's underway, in much of mainland southeast asia, it seemed only right to share this classic album of what is possibly thai music's quintessential sound of celebration; the rhythms of the klong yao (long drum) troupe! although the artists go uncredited on the cassette, i feel confident enough to say that they are the sak sinlapin group, who made several recordings for the sri krung label in the 1970s. from the heavy percussion, yodels, cheers & hollers to the humorous call & response choruses, everything on here spells a good time. interestingly, the second side even finds some piphat orchestration added to the mix. enjoy & happy new year!

Nice find! I had a copy of this tape I found in 1994 or so, or so I think, but I recall that there was one song at the end of side B that started off as a klong yao yodel thing then went into a funky groove with bass drums guitar keys and maybe horns if I can remember right. It was strikingly different then the rest of the tape, and a gem of a piece of music that tied the whole thing together very well.

thanks for the reminiscence, gornick! unfortunately these are all the tracks my tape had.. i wonder where your mystery number came from?

I finally found my copy of this material! The final track from my klong yao tape is here: https://soundcloud.com/user-657734631/khlong-yao-finale. I also have uploaded a track by Sot Si from a tape that had been lost for many years. Disco Rong Pleng is incredible. I'll try to get some more up before long.

thanks Gornick!
interesting.. that track is actually "chinnakon klong yao", which you can find on this tape, too. great find!

Wow, missed that one. Definitely same same. Really diggin' the sound of chinnakon, he had a fantastic voice, very smooth. I always always loved the pipat on this tape, it's uniquely raw and energetic. Good stuff all around.

yes! chinnakon is one of my all-time favorites
