this week, some really fantastic 70's countryside funk from molam sotsi phromseksan!  sotsi is from surin province in south isaan, where roughly half the population are khmer speakers.  she got her start singing the kantruem folk style before being picked up by local songwriter seksan saenphum, who penned her early hits.  later she would team up with southern thai luk thung star chatthong mongkhonthong for a string of duets & answer-songs.  the songs collected here are some exemplary vintage lam phloen with full-band backing, wild intros & rhythm changes, crazy guitar effects, retro synth sounds & more!  this is not one to miss... enjoy!

this is probably the most musically wide-ranging lam cassette i've heard, with the arrangements all being pretty different from track to track. this is just killer! thank you so much!

Sotsi is one of the all time greatest singers ever! She is right up there with Billy and Ella or any other vocal genius!! She has so much soul that it is ridiculous!

Thank you so much for posting this!!! Finding this on your site is literally like winning the lottery! What a treasure!!

Oh and I am pretty sure the guy on the second track is Teporn Pet-Ubon.

thanks for your theory about the identity of the male voice in track 3 (right?). i also figured it was thepphon, but couldn't find out for certain... do you have any evidence, or are you just going by the timbre (like me)?

Wow! Thanks. Sotsi is gold, a favorite for 15 years. I have been looking for more material and info from her and here it is! Fantastic!

Peter,

There is one Thepon record with Sotsi on a couple tracks towards the end. They seemed to work together quite a bit. Their voices really compliment each other very well, and it is interesting to hear Sotsi stretch her voice into the lower registers to reach his notes, and do so convincingly. Really good stuff.

Check this out for more of her stuff:
