this week, an amazing collection of songs from the "king of luk thung", suraphon sombatcharoen! needing little introduction to most fans of thai music, suraphon is often described as the country's "elvis" figure, emerging from a rural-identified art form to nationwide pop preeminence. this cassette collects a number of his most memorable singles from throughout the 1960s. in addition to the tracks backed by his house players, we have a handful of numbers recorded with mukdaphan, or the phayong mukda band (the "p.m." of shadow music fame). a great selection covering a range of disparate styles.. enjoy!

.. and for a deeper dive into suraphon's discography, catch a replay of my recent appearance on gary sullivan's bodega pop live, at wfmu's give the drummer radio.

this week, '80s bangkok pop sounds from the rainbow band! building off the line-up of early r.s. signees inthanin, rainbow was the splinter group of latter-day members who stayed together when the band split, including "tom" phiraphong phonchana (lead vocals/guitar), "pong" rewat sakaeo (guitar/keys), "un" thirasak wadisirisak (keyboard/vocals), "it" suchat chanton (guitar/vocals), "phon" amphon chaowiang (bass), and "ot" thawi siprasoet (drums). they put out their first album together as rainbow in 1986, and a mere two years later they were already on album no. 5, presented here. produced by the phalangkun brothers (ukrit and itthi) at jam studio, the sound is classic r.s. soft-rock, with a characteristic mix of slow ballads and dance numbers. and yes, the name is apparently cribbed from ritchie blackmore's band.. enjoy!

this week, the groovy sounds of late-'70s luk thung! this compilation comes to us from the fine folks at lepso studio, and sounds to be compiled from singles dating to the last year or so of the decade. some of the biggest stars of the era are represented (your sayan, your yotrak, etc.) as well as a host of second-tier but no less exciting singers, a few one-hit wonders, and even a couple country-flavored sides from pop-soul crossover star nanthida kaeobuasai! the emphasis is on funky rhythm sections, big horns, soulful organs and a smattering of southern-style percussion. not a miss in the bunch.. enjoy!

11. ธาราทัต-ธีรวัฒน์ (tharathat-thirawat)

this week, classic recordings from alt-rock pioneers, pause! formed at bangkok's srinakharinwirot university, where the four were studying under the faculty of music, pause was amarin lueangboribun (joe) on vocals, norathep masaeng (no) on bass, phonkrit wiriyanuphap (a) on guitar, and nirut detbun (boss) on drums & percussion. this cassette is their 1996 debut with bakery music, recorded at the label's kamol studio in siam square [the cassette features a different tracklist and album art than the compact disc release, which would swap in a moody café cover photo of the band, as well as one new track and an acoustic version of the hit single]. with their mix of soft ballads and heavier funk-rock numbers, pause managed to capture both the pop audiences and fans of harder alternative sounds, though their career was sadly cut short by singer joe amarin's death in 2002. the rest of the band continued in separate projects, occasionally re-uniting as pause with other frontmen over the years. enjoy!

11. ฉันรักเธอ (chan rak thoe)
12. สาวทุ่งรวงทอง [ดนตรี] (sao thung ruang thong [instrumental])

this week, sweet and mellow retro covers from photchaman phimchan! hailing from nakhon sawan in the central plains, photchaman was married to phon phraisan, one of the leading sound-alikes of suraphon sombatcharoen who stepped up following the star's untimely death. she and phon did several duets albums together, winning a fan base through the '80s with their versions of classic luk thung hits. after a decade out of the spotlight, she came to prominence again in the 2000s as part of the red shirt movement, where she took the stage to repurpose several of her old hits as tributes to (at the time) exiled prime minister thaksin shinawatra. most recently, she's found success as an online fortune-teller, doing tarot card readings over social media[1]. this cassette though, her third solo album, takes us back to 1989, and draws more from the urbane luk krung canon, as opposed to the country-style luk thung material that she'd focused on up to then. it features production by samak wongsarot, an old hand from uea ari chao kao, bringing some unusual arrangements and a lightly chinese-inspired, kim-forward sound. enjoy!

this week, a post in memory of the amazing sathit thongchan, who we lost this month at the age of 68. born and raised in kalasin, sathit grew up in a musical family, though they discouraged him from pursuing a musical career for himself. after initially joining the monkhood and embarking upon a buddhist education, he resolved to follow his dream after all and left home to take up with the saksiam phetchomphu band. there he climbed the ladder from roadie up to a singing role, though after his first recordings didn't get the support needed, he moved first to the rival suphap daoduangden group then eventually settled in at thongchan promotions, where he gained the stage-surname he'd be known by thereafter1. this cassette is his 10th with krung thai, dating from 1989, and has khamkhoeng thongchan producing. classic molam-luk thung pop.. enjoy!

1, 5, 10, 14 featuring မူၺ်ၼုမ်ႇၽွင် (moi num phong)

this week, early recordings from the late, great sai sai mao! on today's cassette he was backed by the aces at ywet wa studio in lashio circa 1978. this would have followed his return from thailand, where he had cut his first few albums with new brother records in chiang mai while serving in the rebel shan state army. it was around the time of these lashio sessions that he met his second wife, moi num phong, who joins him on a few numbers here and carries a couple solo pieces on her own. the lyrics are penned by songwriter sai kham leik (who had given sai mao his revolutionary hit "lik hom mai panglong") and are still in the tai/shan language, from before he won more widespread fame singing in burmese. enjoy!

many thanks to my dear friend samara and her father for help untangling the mix of shan (handwritten and including some older spellings!), burmese, chinese, thai and english writing systems employed on the packaging (though any errors in transcription are mine alone).
